England’s most northerly county, forming much of the border with Scotland, from the oft fought-over Berwick-upon-Tweed in the far north, the Cheviot Hills and the Kielder Forest, south to Hadrian’s Wall, the North Pennines and land north and west of Tyneside. Follow the North Sea coast southward from Berwick, to find the great Medieval castles of Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick and Warkworth. North of Bamburgh Castle (Anglian: Bebbanburh) is Holy Island (Lindisfarne), the island monastery where monks from Iona had settled in the mid-7th century AD.

Tyne and Wear is the metropolitan county formed around the conurbations surrounding these two rivers, including the cities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sunderland. When Newcastle United and Sunderland play each other, it is known as the North-East/Tyne-Wear derby, a fixture first played in 1883. Historically, the twin monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow were home to the Venerable Bede (672/3 to 735AD), famous for his Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Antony Gormley’s 20m tall statue, The Angel of the North, with it’s 54m wingspan, stands in Gateshead, overlooking the A1, A167 and the East Coast Main Line, and is seen by an estimated 33 million travellers per year.
